Vision fell silent after this response, focused on the pot before him. He stirred in an even pattern and his brows were knit together in concentration.
“Though I am determined to practice,” he continued, setting aside the spoon. “I am starting with simple dishes. I wouldn’t trust any of the end results.”
Essence tilted her head curiously, approaching the synthezoid, arms wrapped behind her back, sneaking behind him to look at the content of the pot. She then threw a glance at his face, an amused rictus lifting the corners of her lips as he seemed really intense and focused on his work.
❝ It looks rather good from here. ❞ She commented,
❝ Can I get a taste? ❞ She asked, craning her neck to stare at him again.
❛ Thirty one years to be exact. And I’m not that young anymore.
❜ Pepper didn’t consider herself old, she knew she was still quite young. Yet she didn’t live in an illusion where there were no younger people than her. Watching with excitement as Lillian producing a lily out of nowhere. It still amazed Pepper when ever she did that and she wondered if she’d ever get used to it. Maybe one day. ❛ That is true. Sometimes their company is better than another person’s company. ❜ It didn’t happen often that she would think this way, but when Pepper was driving her crazy, it could have been the truth. Shaking her head, she lowered her gaze a bit, smile fading just a bit, though it was still happy. ❛ He doesn’t. I don’t even think he would ever think about doing that.
❜
Seeing Pepper agree with her on how nice flowers were made Lillian smile even brighter, and for an instant she looked all excited and joyful, like a child being given a lollipop. She loved flowers, but again, she loved a lot of things. That included human beings, even if most were flawed - but she knew she was no exception. Pepper’s answer had her lose her smile progressively, first because she found it sad that Tony didn’t give her flowers, and then because she realized her question had been a little too invasive.
❝ Oh. ❞ She bit her lower lip, her eyes shifting to the ground. She remained silent for a while, throwing nervous glances at Pepper - before hesitantly extending her hand towards her and magically detaching the glowing lilly from the rest of the vines, and handing it to Pepper. She raised her gaze again, unsure of what to say - hoping her gesture would bring a smile back on the redhead’s lips.
Zelda stood there before the lake, staring out at the murky stillness, and trying to recall the dream she had last night. It was unusual and hazy, as dreams often got. Even more unusual was the fact that it happened at all, as she was bedeviled with insomnia. Rare it was that she got a full nights rest, least of all a pleasant dream to accompany it. She only wished she could remember.
The sight of Lillian pulled her out of her musing. Zelda smiled back and drew closer, meeting her under the heavy roof of oak branches. She had liked Lillian from the moment she met her. Gentle and amazingly kind she was, with a trace of that aged wisdom one could only acquire from years of living. She really hadn’t the slightest doubt that there was more to Lillian than that lovely, young face would suggest. Such thoughts fascinated her.
“It’s really good to see you.” She said, after exchanging pleasantries. “What brings you back to the mansion? I can’t imagine it’s just to see me…although I would be very flattered.”
There was something relaxing about the girl’s company, and Lillian had been yearning for such feelings recently. Her thirst for independence made her a lonely creature - too lonely sometimes, and she wanted to meet people and to make friends for once. She wrapped her arms behind her back, the hems of her plaid cardigan floating softly with the chilly autumn breeze. ❝ I am glad to see you too. ❞ She nodded slowly, a small smile on her lips. Her question left her pensive for a few seconds. What did bring her back? She was on good terms with the professor, and she enjoyed the atmosphere around here. Young, hopeful, full of joy. A feeling she had been lacking of as of recently.
❝ Well, ❞ She began, tilting her head pensively. ❝ I needed some time away from the big city. ❞ She explained, bringing a hand to her face and tucking a long, wavy strand of hair behind her ear. ❝ I am thinking of staying here for a while. A few weeks - maybe a few months. I heard the professor was seeking new teachers. ❞ She didn’t think she would be very good at teaching, but she was willing to try. Give herself a goal to achieve, even a small one - and keep her mind busy. ❝ But I was eager to see you again. ❞ She added truthfully. ❝ What have you been up to since we last saw each other? ❞

The ebony-haired woman walked across the gardens of the Xavier’s institute for gifted youngsters, where she had decided to remain for a while, taking a much needed break away from the Avengers compound. She stared blankly at the crumpling leaves under her feet, enjoying the autumn atmosphere. Looking around herself, she saw many mutant children and teenagers playing and wandering around the gardens much like she did, and briefly wondered if this place wasn’t better for her than the compound. Her eyes caught sight of Zelda near the lake and away from most of the other students. Zelda happened to be one of students too, and one of the very few Essence had been sympathizing with since the first day of her arrival at the institute. She raised her head, smiling softly and waving her hand at her.
As much as he tried to keep himself from looking in her direction, the soldier threw one last glance in hopes that she’d be gone, that somehow he’d been lucky enough to avoid trouble for once. Briefly that almost seemed to be the case, she wasn’t where she’d been standing prior but it took only a few seconds for him to notice her steady pace toward him instead. Luck was not on his side, it never was and he considered running to avoid the confrontation but that would do little good for Steve who was still busy with whatever errand he’d come out here for.
Fingers curling into fists, he exhaled heavily and met her gaze, standing his ground firmly. She seemed to be alone as far as he could tell and while he wasn’t sure what kind of powers she had, he felt confident enough that he could at least slow her down enough for Steve to get out. They had contingency plans if things really went wrong but it would undoubtedly reveal where they were hiding and that wasn’t ideal, not for them or T'Challa.
Good point: he had noticed her walking towards him. Bad point: he did not seem very happy about it. She wondered if he would attack her. His clenched fists, hitched breath and this death glance he was throwing firmly at her were not exactly reassuring her, truth be told. She did not want to fight. She was merely curious, and shocked to see him here. And she missed all of her friends who had fought so perilously on his side.
When she reached his height, she stopped walking, her eyes still locked onto his. She remained at a reasonable distance, standing straight, nervously licking her bottom lip. ❝ You should not be here. ❞ She spoke, shaking her head slowly. Her tone was calm and low, but there was a hint of hesitation in her words. It wasn’t a threat - merely a fact. For his security, for… whoever she was persuaded he had brought here with him. She bore no ill feelings towards him, but again, she bore no ill feelings towards anyone. She wanted to know his intentions.
“A bit, but you look damn good, and should wear it. I could use a little candy on my arm.” He said grinning at the end.
❝ Oh… Okay, then. Thank you. It is quite refreshing to see you wear a formal suit for once. ❞ She threw a glance at him over her shoulder. ❝ Would you, ah… mind helping me with the zipper…? ❞

bio.
Lillian Natalie Parr was born on August 27th, 1948, to an Irish mother and an American father. She had always been known as the kind, pure-hearted, selfless girl in her neighborhood. As soon as she could, she joined the military after pursuing a short year of medical studies. She went to serve the troops as a military nurse in Vietnam - she'd always be kind to the soldiers, never hesitating to give away her food portions to those who needed them most, trying to cheer them up, assist them, keep them company. She made no true difference between victims and invaders during her deployment time, going as far as to help wounded Vietnamese civilians and children, much to her superiors' disapproval. One day, she was sent to help a battalion on the field, but they got surrounded and massacred by an unexpected Viet Cong offensive. Everyone perished, Lillian included, as she was shot several times.
However, a few seconds after Lillian died, a small, glowing white flower blossomed near the palm of her bruised hand. From the skies above, someone, something, had taken pity on her - on the purity of her soul, the sacrifice of her every acts. The benevolent force took possession of Lillian's body, bringing her back to life as a new being. Lillian was not truly human anymore, she was not truly herself either. Part of her soul was still here, but merged with another soul, another ethereal, other-wordly being. Many more white flowers bloomed around her as she rose from the battlefield - "Essence" was now her name. Though Essence was peaceful and a life-giver, what she saw around her horrified her, to the point that she unleashed her anger and sadness on every Viet Cong soldiers who was still in the area, white creeping vines strangling them, blinding them, killing them as brutally as they killed Lillian and the rest of her battalion. Her rage sated, Essence ran away.
After this day, Essence kept serving in the military - though many found similarities between her and Lillian's previous self, no one understood who she was, and she, herself, did not give away her 'identity' either. It did not take long however until the SHIELD (aka, HYDRA) learnt about her and sent representatives on the field to learn more about her. When she sensed something was wrong about them, she became hostile - but was outnumbered and outpowered rapidly. Severely wounded, she faded into a flower, and the SHIELD captured her, sealing her into some sort of magic and kinetic-proof glass globe.
2014. The true identity of the SHIELD has been unveiled - the headquarters are under attack. Essence has been their prisoner for over 40 years. But when the ground shook under the weight of the battle above, the globe in which Essence, in her flower form, was contained, fell on the floor and started rolling and banging against the walls. It awoke Essence from her forced slumber - she turned back human, breaking her small prison in shards, and escaping the vault just in time before the rest of the building collapsed on it. Still a bit shaken, she stumbled outside the headquarters and almost got crushed by a gigantic piece of the building, but was saved just in time by Falcon. She quickly understood what was happening and joined the fight, though still weakened by her slumber she did not last long and was picked up by Fury and Black Widow and stayed in their helicopter until the end of the fight.
Shortly after the events of the Triskelion, Essence met the rest of the Avengers - with Clint Barton deciding to retire, they offered her to take his place. She agreed, unsure what else to do in this world she was not familiar with - but making clear she'd always fight for good, fight for life, and not for death.
She was present during the events of Age of Ultron, and during the Civil War as well, siding with Iron Man/Tony Stark.
tl;dr.
Essence is a half-human, half-goddess / otherwordly being. She used to be a regular human being, very kind and benevolent, and served during the Vietnam war, where she died and was brought back to life by an unknown ethereal being who took pity on her. She got captured by the SHIELD and remained imprisoned under her flower form in a glass globe until 2014, when the headquarters of the SHIELD got destroyed. Essence is now a member of the Avengers.
personality.
Kind. Soft. Benevolent. Caring. Selfless. Kind-hearted. Emotional.
She's a bit innocent. Tends to take everything literally. Has a hard time understanding sarcasm.
abilities.
Essence's abilities are based on life, rebirth, and light:
- She can summon glowing white vines, they're very resistant and can be used to fight (eg: to strangle or beat someone, or to restrain them)
- She can infuse life into recently deceased small animals and small plants.
- When she's severely wounded, Essence can choose to retract into a small flower. In that form, she can heal herself progressively and then regain her human form whenever she's ready.
