Smiling about the offer, Pepper couldn’t help but nod. It had been ages since she had actually practiced gardening. But it would probably be nice to do it again, even if she still didn’t have that much time for it. ❛ Oh, the last time I did it was with my grandma. I helped her in the garden a lot when I was a child… that tells you how long it has been.
❜ Pepper lauhed. Taking a sip of her tea, she thought about it for a moment. ❛ Well, I like orchids as well as roses. Especially white ones. Lilies are beautiful as well, and I think that’s about it.
❜
❝ You are still young. So it probably did not happen that long ago. I would say thirty years, maximum. ❞ She nodded slowly, an innocent smile on her lips. There were things such as metaphors, sarcasm and other figures of speech that Lillian hardly understood. She also made a point to ask Tony for Pepper’s birthday next time she saw him. ❝ I love lillies too! ❞ She raised her hand and a small, glowing white vine formed in her palm, slowly taking the shape of a lily. ❝ I really like them. Flowers are so pretty, so different from anything else in nature. ❞ She mused, pensively staring at the lily, making it slide softly between her fingers. ❝ Does Tony ever give you flowers? ❞ She asked pryingly, legitimately curious about her answer.
His posture tensed as he saw her, head ducking low to avoid any kind of eye contact. It was a risk coming back to America in the first place but Steve had been adamant that there were things he needed, Bucky should have known it would get them caught in a situation he’d rather not find himself in. The girl, whoever she was, had been on Tony’s side during the fight and that meant trouble if she’d seen him, even with his replaced arm there was no way he’d get out of America without someone stopping them. He could only hope Steve would hurry up with whatever he was doing so they could get out of there.
She had to look twice in his direction to make sure it really was him. It was hard to tell, without the metallic arm showing and without the… whole scary assassin look. She’d try to convince herself she was mistaking him for someone else, but with all the fuss that had been caused because of him earlier this year, she was pretty certain she knew his face like the back of her hand now. She was not sure what she was supposed to do. She could bet he was not here alone - why was he even here? What was he doing? Did he not know how dangerous this was for him? And were Steve and Wanda with him now? A billion questions sprung through her mind, but after spending a few seconds stamping her feet and looking around herself anxiously hoping the right move to make was, somehow, written on a wall or in the sky, Lillian decided to simply walk in his direction. She kept her eyes firmly locked onto his face as she paced forward, praying he would look back at her and not run away.
Pepper was quite delighted by the idea of Lillian starting a garden on the terrace. There weren’t many plants around at all, none that weren’t just decoration anyway. And knowing her, Pepper knew it would be a great creation. ❛ That sounds really nice. You should do that. And when you’re done, you need to show me sometime. I’m sure it will be wonderful, even without using your abilities.
❜
Truth be told, Lillian was not too good at gardening. But she liked the idea of it. Plants were like pets, or even children ; she could take care of them and try to make them grow into something beautiful. Having Pepper’s approval comforted her in pursuing this little project. ❝ You are too kind. ❞ She smiled. ❝ You could help me, if you want. You look like you could have green fingers. ❞ She added, taking a sip of her tea. ❝ What kind of flowers do you like? ❞
“Thank you. But what are you doing in Hell’s kitchen? Just visiting?”
❝ No, I have an appointment with a lawyer who works around here apparently ; but I am a bit lost. I have never been here before and I do not know how to use the interactive map on my cellular phone.❞

bio.
Lillian Natalie Parr was born on August 27th, 1948, to an Irish mother and an American father. She had always been known as the kind, pure-hearted, selfless girl in her neighborhood. As soon as she could, she joined the military after pursuing a short year of medical studies. She went to serve the troops as a military nurse in Vietnam - she'd always be kind to the soldiers, never hesitating to give away her food portions to those who needed them most, trying to cheer them up, assist them, keep them company. She made no true difference between victims and invaders during her deployment time, going as far as to help wounded Vietnamese civilians and children, much to her superiors' disapproval. One day, she was sent to help a battalion on the field, but they got surrounded and massacred by an unexpected Viet Cong offensive. Everyone perished, Lillian included, as she was shot several times.
However, a few seconds after Lillian died, a small, glowing white flower blossomed near the palm of her bruised hand. From the skies above, someone, something, had taken pity on her - on the purity of her soul, the sacrifice of her every acts. The benevolent force took possession of Lillian's body, bringing her back to life as a new being. Lillian was not truly human anymore, she was not truly herself either. Part of her soul was still here, but merged with another soul, another ethereal, other-wordly being. Many more white flowers bloomed around her as she rose from the battlefield - "Essence" was now her name. Though Essence was peaceful and a life-giver, what she saw around her horrified her, to the point that she unleashed her anger and sadness on every Viet Cong soldiers who was still in the area, white creeping vines strangling them, blinding them, killing them as brutally as they killed Lillian and the rest of her battalion. Her rage sated, Essence ran away.
After this day, Essence kept serving in the military - though many found similarities between her and Lillian's previous self, no one understood who she was, and she, herself, did not give away her 'identity' either. It did not take long however until the SHIELD (aka, HYDRA) learnt about her and sent representatives on the field to learn more about her. When she sensed something was wrong about them, she became hostile - but was outnumbered and outpowered rapidly. Severely wounded, she faded into a flower, and the SHIELD captured her, sealing her into some sort of magic and kinetic-proof glass globe.
2014. The true identity of the SHIELD has been unveiled - the headquarters are under attack. Essence has been their prisoner for over 40 years. But when the ground shook under the weight of the battle above, the globe in which Essence, in her flower form, was contained, fell on the floor and started rolling and banging against the walls. It awoke Essence from her forced slumber - she turned back human, breaking her small prison in shards, and escaping the vault just in time before the rest of the building collapsed on it. Still a bit shaken, she stumbled outside the headquarters and almost got crushed by a gigantic piece of the building, but was saved just in time by Falcon. She quickly understood what was happening and joined the fight, though still weakened by her slumber she did not last long and was picked up by Fury and Black Widow and stayed in their helicopter until the end of the fight.
Shortly after the events of the Triskelion, Essence met the rest of the Avengers - with Clint Barton deciding to retire, they offered her to take his place. She agreed, unsure what else to do in this world she was not familiar with - but making clear she'd always fight for good, fight for life, and not for death.
She was present during the events of Age of Ultron, and during the Civil War as well, siding with Iron Man/Tony Stark.
tl;dr.
Essence is a half-human, half-goddess / otherwordly being. She used to be a regular human being, very kind and benevolent, and served during the Vietnam war, where she died and was brought back to life by an unknown ethereal being who took pity on her. She got captured by the SHIELD and remained imprisoned under her flower form in a glass globe until 2014, when the headquarters of the SHIELD got destroyed. Essence is now a member of the Avengers.
personality.
Kind. Soft. Benevolent. Caring. Selfless. Kind-hearted. Emotional.
She's a bit innocent. Tends to take everything literally. Has a hard time understanding sarcasm.
abilities.
Essence's abilities are based on life, rebirth, and light:
- She can summon glowing white vines, they're very resistant and can be used to fight (eg: to strangle or beat someone, or to restrain them)
- She can infuse life into recently deceased small animals and small plants.
- When she's severely wounded, Essence can choose to retract into a small flower. In that form, she can heal herself progressively and then regain her human form whenever she's ready.
